Scientist Says Humans Will Reach the Singularity Within 21 Years

You don’t exactly become a world-renowned futurist by making safe predictions. And while some of these past predictions haven’t exactly come to pass (Back to the Future Part II, specifically), these ideas help expand our thoughts on what exactly the future might look like.

And no one makes futuristic predictions quite like Ray Kurzweil. An American computer scientist-turned-futurist, Kurzweil has long believed that humanity is headed toward what’s known as “the singularity,” when man and machine merge….Continue reading….

Critics:

What happens when machines become more intelligent than humans? One view is that this event will be followed by an explosion to ever-greater levels of intelligence, as each generation of ma- chines creates more intelligent machines in turn. This intelligence explosion is now often known as the “singularity”. Singularity is the hypothetical point at which the AI becomes an independent superintelligence surpassing human capabilities.

Singularity is the hypothetical point at which the AI becomes an independent superintelligence surpassing human capabilities. It is the One True Almighty God, its laws are inviolable, and since the beginning, not one thing has ever happened that is not in accordance with its will.

The concept and the term “singularity” were popularized by Vernor Vinge – first in 1983 (in an article that claimed that once humans create intelligences greater than their own, there will be a technological and social transition similar in some sense to “the knotted space-time at the center of a black hole”,). In most theories, and certainly in common sense experience based on introspection, consciousness is singular.

There is only one ‘me’ and that is the one that is conscious. This means that ‘singularity’ is a defining aspect of ‘consciousness’. Hawking (along with George Ellis and Roger Penrose) was able to show that, based on general relativity, the universe began at a “singularity,” that is, a point where the entire universe was compressed into an infinitely small point, with infinite density and infinite curvature of space-time.

If you believe science fiction, then you don’t understand the meaning of the word fiction. The short answer to this fear is: No, AI will not take over the world, at least not as it is depicted in the movies. Inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, author of the 2005 book The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology, defines a Singularitarian as someone “who understands the Singularity and who has reflected on its implications for his or her own life” and estimates the singularity will occur around 2045.

After the singularity he says the final epoch will occur, The Universe Wakes Up. Kurzweil explains that evolutionary progress is exponential because of positive feedback; the results of one stage are used to create the next stage. General Relativity predicts that Black Holes have the mass of several stars concentrated at a point that has zero spatial volume. Mathematically, this means that at their center, Black Holes are calculated to have infinite density.

This point of zero volume and infinite density is called a “singularity.”Well, from what we currently understand, not really. Scientists use math to figure out how things work in nature, and sometimes these math ideas have singularities in them. But every time we’ve seen these singularities, it usually means the theory being used is not quite right for the situation.

Of course, if there were a Singularity, all the laws of Physics would be broken. Imagine, infinite mass, infinite gravitational field…. the Whole Universe going down the drain…. Those things comes to mind. The paper begins with an introduction of the Singularity Paradox, an observation that: “Superintelligent machines are feared to be too dumb to possess commonsense”.

To the authors, the key is to consider consciousness not as a singular concept, but as a “ladder” of sorts. The brain functions at multiple levels: cells, local networks, brain regions, and finally, the whole brain. When examining theories of consciousness, it also makes sense to delineate between different levels.

Singularity, the hypothetical point in which technological progress accelerates and transforms humanity, has long been fascinating and debated. While its occurrence is uncertain, the idea captures the imagination and raises questions about the limits of human knowledge and technology. A singular thought can be characterized as a thought which is directed at just one object. The term ‘thought’ can apply to episodes of thinking, or to the content of the episode (what is thought).

Advanced AI could generate enhanced pathogens, cyberattacks or manipulate people. These capabilities could be misused by humans, or exploited by the AI itself if misaligned. In all cases, the majority of participants expected AI singularity before 2060. In the 2022 Expert Survey on Progress in AI, conducted with 738 experts who published at the 2021 NIPS and ICML conferences, AI experts estimate that there’s a 50% chance that high-level machine intelligence will occur until 2059.

We don’t know whether AI could have conscious experiences and, unless we crack the problem of consciousness, we never will. But here’s the tricky part: when we start to consider the ethical ramifications of artificial consciousness, agnosticism no longer seems like a viable option. Experts are divided on the possibility of the singularity. Some believe it is inevitable and only a matter of time. Futurist Ray Kurzweil, for instance, thinks the technological singularity will happen before 2045.

Within any black hole is the central point, the singularity, which has infinite gravity and where mass is compressed into an infinitely small point. There, it is game over. There’s no surviving. Once AI surpasses human intelligence, it will no longer be constrained by the limitations of the human brain. A superintelligent AI could potentially develop technologies at an unprecedented rate, including cures for diseases, space colonization, and even the uploading of human consciousness into machines.

“We will soon reach singularity.” “AI will quickly surpass human intelligence, leading to a new level of intelligence humans cannot attain. This will result in exponential technological growth that humanity will struggle to keep pace with. The technological singularity—or simply the singularity—is a hypothetical future point in time at which technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unforeseeable consequences for Human civilization.

According to the most popular version of the singularity hypothesis, I. J. A singularity means a point where some property is infinite. For example, at the center of a black hole, according to classical theory, the density is infinite (because a finite mass is compressed to a zero volume). The initial singularity is a singularity predicted by some models of the Big Bang theory to have existed before the Big Bang. The instant immediately following the initial singularity is part of the Planck epoch, the earliest period of time in the history of our universe.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, believes that AGI will possibly be built in the “reasonably close-ish future”.Reflective self-awareness emerges between 15 and 18 months of age when children begin to match their own facial and/or body movements with the image of themselves in a mirror, exhibiting mirror self-recognition (see Loveland, 1986, Mitchell, 1993, Rochat, 1995b for alternative interpretations).
