Our Children Are Not Ready : A Generational Crisis in the Age of AI

I was on a panel recently discussing the future of work when a fellow panelist shared a chilling statistic. In their research, they had monitored the social media platform Discord and found a server with approximately 5,000 children actively and openly discussing suicide. These conversations were unfolding in a digital space with virtually no adult supervision a dark corner of the internet where despair was festering among the generation expected to build our future……..Continue reading….

Critics:

AI can already easily amplify manipulative information and produce fake content, and it’s children who are most vulnerable to being manipulated or abused in these environments posing long-term negative effects on their development and well-being. AI systems are fundamentally changing the world and affecting present and future generations of children. Children are already interacting with AI technologies in many different ways:

They are embedded in toys, virtual assistants, video games, and adaptive learning software. Interacting with AI, especially virtual assistants or smart toys, might reduce the time kids spend building real-life social skills. There’s also a concern that some AI-based toys or programs might not teach children proper emotional responses, which could affect how they understand emotions.

The AI doll, named Tong Tong, resembles a three-year-old child and possesses the emotional development and cognitive ability of a human child of the same age. The creation of Tong Tong marked a remarkable leap in artificial intelligence technology. AI is a fantastic platform for creativity, allowing kids to explore everything from coding to digital art. Apps that generate music, help design animations, or even assist in storytelling can spark a child’s imagination.

However, it’s important that these tools are used as aids, not crutches. An overreliance on AI technology could result in the loss of human influence  and a lack in human functioning  in some parts of society. Using AI in healthcare could result in reduced human empathy and reasoning, for instance. In the report’s quantitative study, half (51%) of young people ages 14–22 reported using generative AI at some point, but only 4% claimed to be daily users.

At its core, AI involves creating computer programs that can solve problems, make decisions, and improve over time. These smart programs can analyze data, recognize patterns, and adapt to new information. ChatGPT’s terms of use state that children under 13 years old should not use the chatbot. Additionally, children aged 13-18 must get a parent’s permission before using the software.

However, ChatGPT has no age verification, so children may try and access it without their parent’s knowledge. AI stands for Artificial Intelligence—which basically means a robot brain that can learn things and help people create. Here are a few everyday examples: Asking Alexa or Siri a question. Autocorrect while texting. It can enhance communication, support role negotiation, and promote family cohesion, but it also raises ethical and privacy concerns.

The balance between utilizing AI to support family values and avoiding the detrimental effects of over-reliance is crucialIt can enhance communication, support role negotiation, and promote family cohesion, but it also raises ethical and privacy concerns. Ask them to explain complex points, the reasoning behind their arguments, or the meaning of specific words or phrases they used. If they are unable to provide satisfactory answers or seem confused by their own work, it could be an indication that they didn’t write it themselves. AI offers students instantaneous and detailed feedback on their work, helping them to see their strengths and weaknesses.

Such feedback enhances understanding and learning outcomes—and helps teachers to know what to focus on in future lessons. Early research indicates that strong attachments to AI-generated characters may contribute to struggles with learning social skills and developing emotional connections. They may also negatively affect adolescents’ ability to form and maintain real-world relationship.

Artificial intelligence comes from sets of instructions that people write. These instructions are called programs. Computers use programs to analyze, or study, large amounts of information quickly. Then they pick answers or actions from among many choices. Even though they respond in warm, friendly ways, they don’t care about our children. Interacting with AI can be thought-provoking and enlightening.

One thing AI can never do is be a substitute for the safe, stable and nurturing relationships that children need to grow. Many argue that it’s okay for students to use AI as a research tool to help them generate ideas and gather information for homework assignments. But AI tools should never be used to write academic papers or answer questions for graded assignments. Introduce young students to AI and machine learning with hands-on activities using predictive data models.

Students will practice making their own predictions and learn about data categorization and sorting. AI is changing everything for all of us. While men and women will both need to use energy as their greatest asset, women have the evolutionary advantage. We’ve had to manage our energy and use it to manage others’ to survive. Now we get to use that skill to thrive. Rather than stifling originality, AI can amplify creativity.

Students might use AI to generate story starters, design prototypes for projects, or analyze data for science experiments. These applications show how AI can serve as a collaborator in the creative process. AI-driven transformations affect all sectors and often trigger psychological responses such as denial, shock, frustration, and anger , which may lead to anxiety  followed by depression as individuals move through stages of adaptation..
