As OpenAI is not publicly traded, purchasing its stock is not available to everyone. To buy the stock of a private company like OpenAI, you must be an accredited investor. If you meet the accreditation criteria, you can register for Forge’s Secondary Marketplace to buy private market stock.Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and committed another $10 billion to the AI innovator in 2023.

The partnership deepened along the way as Microsoft added OpenAI’s tools to its Azure cloud-computing service, to its Bing search engine, and to its Edge browser.  OpenAI generates revenue through various sources such as grants, donations, and strategic partnerships. These funds are then reinvested to support their research activities and the pursuit of their mission. Grants are a significant source of revenue for OpenAI.

Look into companies that work with them, such as Google, Microsoft, or Nvidia. You cannot buy ChatGPT shares because of the corporation. It all began with Microsoft’s $1 billion investment in OpenAI in 2019 and ramped up with its $10 billion commitment in 2023, much of which is in the form of cloud compute purchases instead of cash.In a nutshell, ChatGPT-4 represents a leap forward in AI language models.

Enhanced reasoning, captivating language, and advanced capabilities make it a worthwhile upgrade. While GPT-3 remains reliable for speed, GPT-4 is your go-to for top-tier performance. If you want to start investing in AI, there are two main paths: selecting individual stocks or opting for AI ETFs (exchange-traded funds). Whether you’re starting fresh or looking to deepen your investment, exploring these avenues can align you with the future of technology.

AI stocks are on a roll as investors have been reacting to signs that demand for the technology is at the start of a long period of growth. Since the beginning of 2023, AI-connected stocks have delivered 30% better returns than both U.S. and global indexes. NVDA is the best-performing AI stock over the past year. Earnings per share, or EPS, had a big leap higher in 2023, and analysts project strong EPS growth going forward. It has the highest forecasted 5-year EPS growth on the list.

OpenAI is a privately held company. This means only accredited and institutional investors can invest in the company before its IPO. Investors seeking exposure to OpenAI can invest indirectly via venture funds and investment syndicates, or purchase shares directly on pre-IPO marketplaces like Hiive. The OpenAI ownership pie is divided between Microsoft (49%), other stakeholders (49%).

The original OpenAI non-profit foundation, which staunchly preserves its autonomy as the leading firm continues to write OpenAI history. Other OpenAI shareholders include a16z, Sequoia, Tigers Global, and Founders Fund. Microsoft is entitled to up to 49 percent of the for-profit arm of OpenAI’s profits, according to reports. But that’s not the same as 49% ownership.

That investment does not result in Microsoft owning part of OpenAI, which is now clearer following an update to the OpenAI website and clarification from the company. Microsoft doesn’t own ChatGPT nor the company OpenAI which is founded by Chatgpt’s CEO Sam Altman. but the both companies have been partnered commercially since 2016 so Microsoft continues to be the company’s largest investor.

When will OpenAI go public? OpenAI stock is not currently publicly traded and as of early July 2024, there are no plans for an OpenAI IPO on the horizon. For now, investors can gain exposure through related tech companies discussed here. Microsoft has been a massive fund provider and technology partner for OpenAI. In 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion and an additional $10 billion in 2023

Beyond the financial investment, Microsoft also powers OpenAI’s process by providing the essential computing infrastructure for research and programming. It’s captured the general public’s attention and piqued the interest of tech giants such as Elon Musk and Microsoft. ChatGPT is shocking because it can answer complex questions and produce information as a human would.

Its limitations are hard to understand, and its implications are tangible for most of us. OpenAI is not just another tech behemoth. It is a set of entities constructed to advance the legal purposes of a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable corporation. The nonprofit and its tax-exempt charitable purposes, rather than Altman, should have been the star of the show.

Chat GPT is owned by OpenAI LP, an artificial intelligence research lab consisting of the for-profit OpenAI LP and its parent company, the non-profit OpenAI Inc.
