This is a key reason some photographers avoid watermarking. Photography is all about lighting, composition and subject. Adding a watermark can detract from the art. Even the most subtle watermark might diminish the power of a photo. There are two types of digital watermarking, visible and invisible.

The primary disadvantage of adding watermarks to a digital design is that it can interfere with the visual appeal and readability of the design itself. Furthermore, watermarks can be considered intrusive or distracting, potentially undermining the intended communication or impact of the design. It’s not a good idea to put a watermark logo embedded in the item photos because there are other resellers that would like to buy the item from you and use your photos and resell it to their customer.

While watermarking can be a great deterrent, it’s not the same thing as a copyright, nor is it a substitute for officially obtaining copyright protection from the US Copyright Office. A watermarking system is usually divided into three distinct steps, embedding, attack, and detection. In embedding, an algorithm accepts the host and the data to be embedded, and produces a watermarked signal. Then the watermarked digital signal is transmitted or stored, usually transmitted to another person.

Adding a picture watermark is an easy way to make the pages of your document look like stationery. Use your company’s logo to show off your brand. On the Design tab, select Watermark. Select Custom Watermark, and then choose Picture Watermark. Ideally, the watermark should be visible without detracting attention away from the contents of the image itself. For that reason, it’s better to use a watermark that’s free of any color or anything else that’s too eye-catching.

The simplest way to tone down your watermark is to keep your logo compact, and set the opacity to below 50% — look under the Layers palette in Photoshop for the relevant slider. This allows some of the underlying image to seep through, while maintaining a clear mark.

The standard spot to put your watermarks is on the bottom right corner of the photograph. A watermark in the bottom right corner is visible enough, but it does not drastically detract the viewer’s attention from a photograph. When watermarks are put in the bottom right, it is often kept relatively small.If the contact details of the photographer are not shown on the watermark, a quick internet search will usually find the business/person named on the watermark.

 If you cannot contact the copyright owner and get permission, then you cannot use the photo. Keep your watermark simple: Make sure it’s visible but doesn’t take over the picture. It should add to the photo quietly. Choose the right color and opacity: Your watermark should blend well with the photo. Think of it as a subtle addition that enhances rather than stands out too much.

Moreover, the internet also opens opportunities for intellectual property thieves. Every day, photos and images are stolen from websites. Those stolen images are used to make a profit for someone other than the owner. Watermarking photographs uploaded online is the most reliable way to prevent photo theft.The watermark isn’t really about protecting the image though, it’s just letting people know who took the photo. It’s worth the time to develop, or commison, a nice watermark that looks good enough that it doesn’t detract from the image.

Text-Based Watermark: A text watermark is simply a word or phrase added to an image, such as your name or the name of your business. If your text watermark is too small, too light, or in a hard-to-read font, it can be difficult for others to see and identify. Watermarks should be visible enough to provide adequate protection against image theft, but if they’re too prominent they’ll obscure too much of the image for it to be appreciated at all.

With Photoshop Lightroom, it’s easy to add a text watermark on desktop or with your mobile device. Just turn on the Include Watermark option that appears in the Export As screen on iOS or in the Export Settings on Android. Position your text, choose your own font, style, opacity, and add a drop shadow.
