Concerning Levels of Uranium And Lead Found in The Urine of Teens Who Frequently Vape

(AleksandrYu/Getty Images)

Teenagers who regularly puff away on their vape throughout the day could be exposing their bodies to potentially toxic metals. A new study led by researchers from the University of Nebraska has found that regular vapers between the ages of 13 and 17, who report using an e-cigarette at least eight times a day, have 30 percent more lead and twice as much uranium in their urine compared to their peers who only occasionally vape.

Among teens who preferred sweet vape flavors, as opposed to menthol or mint ones, biomarkers of uranium were especially high…..Story continues

“People need to understand that e-cigarettes are potentially dangerous to your health,” says Blaha. “Emerging data suggests links to chronic lung disease and asthma, as well as associations between dual use of e-cigarettes and smoking with cardiovascular disease. A smoker typically puffs on a cigarette around 10-15 times before putting it out, so let’s be conservative and estimate that puffing on a vape 15 times is approximately equal to smoking one cigarette.

If that’s the case, then a disposable vape that delivers 600 puffs is equal to about two packs of cigarettes. Breathing in the harmful chemicals from vaping products can cause irreversible (cannot be cured) lung damage, lung disease and, in some cases, death. Some chemicals in vaping products can also cause cardiovascular disease and biological changes that are associated with cancer development.

Vaping is not smoking, but the similar hand-to-mouth action enables a seamless transition for cigarette smokers. To get the best experience, you should mimic how you traditionally smoke a cigarette. There are two inhalation techniques: Mouth-to-lung (MTL) and Direct-to-lung (DTL).

What are the side effects of vaping?
  • Coughing.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Eye irritation.
  • Headaches.
  • Dry and irritated mouth and throat.
  • Nausea.

While vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, it is unlikely to be totally harmless. The healthiest option is not to smoke or vape. So, if you are vaping to quit smoking, you should aim to eventually stop vaping too. Is 2% Vape a Lot of Nicotine? A 2% vape or 2%/20mg of nicotine in an e-liquid is considered high strength. A 2% nicotine concentration may be harsher on the throat and is recommended for heavy smokers who may smoke more than a pack of cigarettes a day.

However, it’s essential to be mindful of excessive vaping. Cycling through multiple 600-puff disposable vapes a day, for example, can lead to heightened nicotine levels and potential health risks. Keeping the number of puffs you draw under 600 per day is a good rule of thumb. What counts as heavy vaping? If you are puffing more than 10ml of liquid a day, you are vaping heavily.

That’s more than a thousand puffs. There are different methods of vaping which can impact how many puffs is considered heavy vaping. Lung function starts to improve 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting. From 1–12 months after quitting, symptoms such as coughing and breathing problems should improve as lung structures heal. If people wish to quit vaping, they can speak with a healthcare professional.

If you or someone else vapes indoors in the home or office, it can create a strong odor that doesn’t just go away with an air freshener. Both e-liquids and weed vapor release chemicals that build up on walls, ceilings, carpeting, upholstery, curtains, bedding, and more.To get a good nicotine hit you need to inhale the vapour into your lungs. Mouth hitting and then exhaling as you would with a cigar or pipe will not deliver as much nicotine unless you are using very high strength, and likely a non-inhalable strength.

While the smell from vaping is faint, you may catch a whiff of a flavoring. For example, if you smell bubble gum when there’s no gum in their room or chocolate cake when you aren’t baking anything, take note. It might be a flavored nicotine vape. Marijuana vapes can produce a skunk-like smell. E-cigarettes produce a number of dangerous chemicals including acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde.

These aldehydes can cause lung disease, as well as cardiovascular (heart) disease. E-cigarettes also contain acrolein, a herbicide primarily used to kill weeds. When vape juice is heated it can potentially damage enamel and irritate soft tissue. As the ingredients tend to be thick and sticky, vapers may be at a higher risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease,” Dr Brown said. “Vape juice contains propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG).

E-cigarette vapor also includes cancer-causing chemicals, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are known to pose risks to health. Finally, e-cigarettes also pose a second-hand smoke risk, like regular tobacco cigarettes. The devices do not just emit harmless water vapor, as some argue. Vaping can help some people quit smoking. Vaping is usually cheaper than smoking. Vaping is not harmless, but it is much less harmful than smoking.

Vaping is less harmful to those around you than smoking, as there’s no current evidence that second-hand vapour is dangerous to others. One estimate assumes an average smoker finishes a cigarette in around 10 to 15 puffs in 5 to 8 minutes. Considering a vaper using a 5% nicotine e-liquid in a basic refillable pod device, they may need somewhere between 30-50 puffs to ingest a similar amount of nicotine.
