Barclays Investment Bankers Need To Pick Up The Pace

A step behind. Photographer: Bloomberg

Barclays Plc, BNP Paribas SA and Deutsche Bank Group AG have all made big promises about the growth to come from their investment banks as part of their aims to boost profits for shareholders.

It might be unfair to judge progress against a single quarter’s fresh results, but of the three Barclays looks most off the pace. The first three months of 2024 saw a good rebound in investment banking activity……Story continues

Investment bankers are financial advisors to corporations and, in some cases, to governments. They help their clients raise money. That may mean issuing stock shares, floating a bond issue, negotiating the acquisition of a rival company, or arranging the sale of the company itself. Investment bankers are typically the highest-paid workers in the finance industry—high salaries are most prevalent even among younger employees.

The starting salary for the typical investment banker exceeds that of most other finance positions, but working in this field has its challenges. Aspiring investment bankers need a robust educational background and usually pursue a bachelor’s degree in a finance-related field, with some going on to a graduate degree or MBA before becoming certified through an organization like the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and completing on-the-job training.

The biggest investment banks in the USA include J.P. Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Citigroup. These institutions dominate global finance through extensive services, including mergers and acquisitions, trading, asset management, and underwriting. The Big 4 investment banks are Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan Chase, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Bank tiers indicate an institution’s financial health. For example, a Tier 1 bank can immediately absorb losses without halting banking operations.

A Tier 2 bank or institution with supplementary capital has less secure and harder to liquidate assets, which is less stable during a crisis. Goldman Sachs is generally regarded as the leading investment bank in most business areas, and is the toughest Bulge Bracket investment bank to break into. Goldman has a very strong reputation within the industry and among corporations.

Goldman Sachs is the highest paying bank overall – $398k in combined salaries and bonuses, on average. Goldman Sachs, which paid average salaries of $200k and average bonuses of $199k for 2023, was the highest paying bank we polled. Investment bankers can make $500k a year, especially at higher levels and in major financial centers.

Despite the rising number of applications and the falling number of internships, the hardest (major) investment bank to land an internship isn’t the venerable JPMorgan and its 0.91% acceptance rate or Goldman Sachs and its 0.8%. No, the toughest bank to land an internship at – statistically – is Morgan Stanley. The concept of the “safest investment” can vary depending on individual perspectives and economic contexts.

But generally, cash and government bonds—particularly U.S. Treasury securities—are often considered among the safest investment options available. This is because there is minimal risk of loss. Ultra-wealthy individuals invest in such assets as private and commercial real estate, land, gold, and even artwork. Real estate continues to be a popular asset class in their portfolios to balance out the volatility of stocks. Wells Fargo Private Clients receive personalized wealth planning, investment management, trust services, and private banking.

Additionally, clients with unique assets, such as small businesses, oil, gas and minerals, and investment real estate, enjoy access to hands-on management from experts in these niches. According to Indeed, the average base salary for an investment banker in the U.S. is $86,824, not even six figures. But these professionals can go far and rake in a lot more money. On the highest earning end of the spectrum, investment bankers make $544K.

JP Morgan private bank minimum requirement is $10 million. Chase private bank minimum requirement is an average beginning day balance of $150,000 or more. Morgan Stanley private bank minimum requirement does not exist. Many ultra-high-net-worth individuals choose to conduct their banking at the same institutions that are frequented by average consumers.
