Algorithms: How Big Data is Already Influencing Our Culture

 Vicky Leta

Recommendation algorithms are everywhere. They constantly suggest us new music, TV shows, dinner, and even potential romantic partners — and for the most part they can be pretty good at predicting what we like. How?

Broadly, algorithms are a specific set of instructions that when followed should always result in a desired outcome, whether that’s solving a problem or performing a task.…Story continues

Any step-by-step process that is completed the same way every time is an algorithm. A good example of this in everyday life is tying your shoes. There are a limited number of steps that effectively result in a traditional shoelace know (known as the “bunny rabbit” or “loop, swoop and pull” knot). An algorithm is a procedure used for solving a problem or performing a computation.

Algorithms act as an exact list of instructions that conduct specified actions step by step in either hardware- or software-based routines. Algorithms are widely used throughout all areas of IT. A social media algorithm is a complex set of rules and calculations used by social media platforms to prioritize the content that users see in their feeds. Past user behavior, content relevance, and the popularity of posts are some of the vital algorithm factors taken into account by different social media platforms.

An algorithm is a set of instructions that is designed to accomplish a task. Algorithms usually take one or more inputs, run them systematically through a series of steps, and provide one or more outputs. Typically, algorithms are executed by computers, but we also rely on algorithms in our daily lives. Each time we follow a particular step-by-step process, like making coffee in the morning or tying our shoelaces, we are in fact following an algorithm.

Simply put, an algorithm is a set of steps used to solve a specific problem. While algorithms often appear in computer science or coding contexts, an algorithm can be as straightforward as the process for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Algorithms are used to find the best possible way to solve a problem, based on data storage, sorting and processing, and machine learning. In doing so, they improve the efficiency of a program. Algorithms are used in all areas of computing. Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are considered to be the top social media platforms with the strongest algorithms. These platforms use advanced algorithms to personalize content for users, surface relevant content, and combat misinformation and hate speech.

The Facebook algorithm uses programming rules and machine learning to decide what you see in your Facebook Feed. It selects posts, Stories, and ads based on your interactions, the type of content, and how recent the posts are, aiming to give you a personalized and engaging experience. An algorithm is a set of commands that must be followed for a computer to perform calculations or other problem-solving operations.

According to its formal definition, an algorithm is a finite set of instructions carried out in a specific order to perform a particular task. Algorithms manage several tasks which would be tedious for humans to carry out, such as managing flows of content through active recommendations as well as negative shadow bans and mediating interaction with information through likes and comments to improve content discoverability.

Algorithms first taught us how to count, sort, walk, and tie our shoes. Almost all processes are taught to us with step-by-step instructions. Essentially, we are learning algorithmic thinking to work through problem-solving. See your data work for you. The oldest recorded non-trivial algorithm is the Euclidean algorithm for the greatest common divisor of two positive integers. The algorithm is as follows. Let a > b be positive integers. (1) divide a by b and find the remainder r.

E-commerce Product Sorting: Websites like Amazon use sorting algorithms to display products based on price, popularity, or relevance. When you sort items from low to high price, a sorting algorithm rearranges the products to match your preference. Algorithms are used in every part of computer science. They form the field’s backbone. In computer science, an algorithm gives the computer a specific set of instructions, which allows the computer to do everything, be it running a calculator or running a rocket.

Some of the disadvantages of an algorithm are: Branching and looping are complicated in algorithms. Understanding complex logic via algorithms can be challenging. Algorithms take time to develop, and large tasks are difficult to incorporate into algorithms. While all of these factors can make it seem like social media algorithms are reading your mind, the truth is that they are simply using data and machine learning to make predictions about what content you are most likely to engage with.
